Is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States.  It is considered the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and it is described as one of the busiest shopping day of the year.  
There are promotional sales, and some retailers offers small gifts to their customers in order to attract them.  Black Friday shopping is known for attracting aggressive crowds, with annual reports of assaults, shootings, and throngs of people trampling on other shoppers in an attempt to get the best deal on a product before supplies run out.
The name has relation with bank accounts words. From this day Retailers increase the number of sales, turning a profit, or being “in the black”.  Other contexts say that the origin is the name given by Philadelphia Police Department to the Friday following Thanksgivien Day.  That day brought massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks in the City Center while shops were open.
It is not a federal holiday, but in some states, government employees don't work that day.  And, may employers give their employees the day off as part of Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Shops usually open early in the morning, at about 6:00 a.m. But, this tendency is changing. Nowadays, lots of shops and retailers open before that time, or even at midnight.  And, this year some major retailers have opened their doors a day before, on Thursday, the day of Thanksgiving.
