THANKSGIVING DAY, BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER MONDAY

THANKSGIVING DAY

Each year on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans gather for a day of feasting, football and family. It is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have. While today's Thanksgiving celebrations would likely be unrecognizable to attendees of the original 1621 harvest meal, it continues to be a day for Americans to come together around the table - albeit with some updates to pilgrim's menu. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie and vegetables.

Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season. Some people have a four-day weekend so it is popular time for trips and to visit family and friends. This day is one of the busiest periods for travel in the USA. This can cause congestion and overcrowding. Seasonal parades and busy football games can cause disruption to local traffic.

BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Since the early 2000s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales.

It isn't an official holiday but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day.

Nowadays, more and more Spanish companies are getting used to offering discounts in order to start Christmas shopping season too.

CYBER MONDAY

It is a marketing term for the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday. The term "Cyber Monday" was created by marketing companies to persuade people to shop online.

The deals on Cyber Monday are online-only and generally offered by smaller retailers that cannot compete with the big retailers. Black Friday offers better deals on techonology, with nearly 85% more data storage deals than Cyber Monday.

GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming: World already halfway towards threshold that could result in dangerous climate change, say scientists

The world is heading towards unchartered territory at 'frightening speed'

“Every year we report a new record in greenhouse gas concentrations. Every year we say that time is running out. We have to act now to slash greenhouse gas emissions if we are to have a chance to keep the increase in temperatures to manageable levels,” Mr Jarraud said.

Ways to Reduce Air Pollution

At home
*Conserve energy - turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.*Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans. (This conserves energy and reduces production emissions.)
*Buy green electricity-produced by low-or even zero-pollution facilities.
(not all the energy companies produce the same quantity of green electricity, but they have the obligation of show you the rate of it they are selling if you ask them)
*Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot.

Buy Smart
* Buy ENERGY STAR products, including energy efficient lighting and appliances. They are environmentally friendly products.
*Choose products that have less packaging and are reusable.
*Shop with a canvas bag instead of using paper and plastic bags.
* Buy rechargeable batteries for devices used frequently.

Drive wise
* Keep tires properly inflated and aligned.
* In the summertime, fill gas tank during cooler hours to cut down on evaporation.
* Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines, for example, at fast-food restaurants or banks. Park your car and go in. STOP YOUR CAR while you are waiting
* When possible, use public transportation, walk, or ride a bike.

GUY FAWKES NIGHT

What do you know about this rhyme?

"Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."

Exactly! It refers to Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night.

On the 5th of November 1605, Guy Fawkes (or "Guido" as he prefered to be called) was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels and a number of fuses. It was a conspiracy to kill James I and his government! Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason.

In England, the 5th of November is still commemorated each year with fireworks and bonfires culminating with the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes (the guy) and people chanting the rhyme. Guys are made by children by filling old clothes with crumpled newspapers to look like a man. Tradition allows British children to display their guys to passers-by and asking for "A penny for the guy".

Nowadays, families and friends meet to have dinner all together. They usually have baked potatoes, bangers and mash, toffee apples... for dinner.

DIA MUNDIAL CONTRA EL CANCER DE PECHO

* 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.
* Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women  - 31% of cancers diagnosed in women are breast cancer.
* 1 in 5 cases of breast cancer are in women under 50.
* Breast cancer rates in England have increased by 90% since records began in 1971.

WITHOUT CARS

Car Free Day

Air pollution and problems with urban commuting are of great concern to people today. European surveys have shown that over six people in ten say that automobile traffic in the city is unbearable.
..........It focuses on raising the awareness of urban dwellers with respect to nuisances caused by the use of private cars in the city. ............ Oxfordshire County Council are encouraging their staff to travel to work by foot, bike or public transport. ...

If you are one of the 4 million people who commute less than 3 miles by car, cycling to work could save you money, get you fit and help you do your bit for the environment.
At a leisurely pace, a distance of 3 miles takes only twenty minutes. It’s an aerobic exercise that is kind to your joints – research has found that regular cyclists have a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger, and unlike a gym membership, if you don’t use your bicycle you will not be charged.

EuropeanMobilityWeek is about mixing travel modes and encouraging the general public to have an active lifestyle. It places a strong emphasis on changing our habits, by choosing more sustainable modes of transport, such as cycling, walking and collective or public transport, as well as combining different modes in a single journey. This will help make our cities cleaner, quieter, safer, less congested and nicer places to live! ...........Violeta Bulc, Commissioner for Transport..................http://www.mobilityweek.eu/

The ‘Day Without Cars’ is considered to be a brave undertaking, as Paris is very car dependent and has experienced some of the highest pollution levels in the world. Such levels are partially caused by the particularly high volume of cars commuting in and out of the capital each day. According to Paris City Hall, the move will be “a crazy gamble, but achievable”,
